been thinking about how silence used to be a place you went to. now it’s a thing you have to defend. my grandfather used to sit on the porch for an hour after dinner doing nothing. if I tried that today I’d reach for my phone within ninety seconds. somewhere along the way we stopped being able to be alone with ourselves and started calling it boredom.
